British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913
A.W. SARGENT (photographer) 'S/S Terra Nova Leaving Cardiff for the South Pole', [15 June 1910]; '"Terra Nova" Arriving at Cardiff from South Antarctic Expedition Captained by Commander Evans', [June 14 1913].
Two brown-toned carbon prints, each 9 x 11in. (25 x 30cm.), each mounted on card, the first with photographer's credit in the negative, the second with blindstamp, both titled and inscribed in pencil on the verso of the card mounts, the first with an integral inset bust-length portrait of Scott, the second with a similar portrait of Evans. The second with early card window mount. [with:] Five photographs of the Terra Nova (three taken in London just before her departure; two of her departure from Cardiff); and 23 other photographs or images based on photographs, all relating to Scott's last expedition.
Provenance: Kathleen Scott (ne Bruce, later Hilton Young); by descent.
A fine collection of photographs. The Terra Nova left London docks on June 1, 1910 and sailed for Cardiff to load the Welsh coal donated to the expedition. "Cardiff held a special place in the expedition's heart as the city which had given them the most fervent support. The Lord Mayor now produced a further 1,000 for the fund. In recognition Scott promised to make Cardiff the Terra Nova's first port of call on his return" (D. Preston, A First Rate Tragedy, London, 1997, p.123). This promise was not forgotten and the second photograph recalls the return to mainland Britain of the Terra Nova. After two days spent painting and cleaning up in the Scilly Islands, and under very different circumstances to those imagined three years earlier, the Terra Nova, under the command of Evans, docked in Cardiff on 14 June 1913.
