Frank Hurley (1885-1911)

Argonauts of the South...Being a Narrative of Voyagings and Polar Seas and Adventures in the Antarctic with Sir Douglas Mawson and Sir Ernest Shackleton. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1925. 8 (23.5 x 15.8cm.) 2 folding maps, 70 plates (with 75 images). (Occasional light spotting.) Original green cloth, lettered in gilt, dust-jacket (various neat repairs to the dust-jacket).

FIRST EDITION of this autobiographical work by arguably the greatest of all Polar photographers. Hurley was engaged as expedition photographer to Mawson's Australian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) and then photographer and cinematographer to Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917). The present work describes both expeditions.
