The Alexander Henry records confirm that the rifle was completed circa 1876. This rifle is the first encountered at Christie's in which the damascus barrels are of chopper-lump construction - all other damascus-barrelled guns and rifles so far examined have had dovetail, through or plain drop lumps. There is a distinct possibility that rifle No. 2170 is a particularly rare variant in this respect
