Lot Essay

This work is closely related to an oil entitled Milking Time in the collection of the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; as well as a charcoal drawing executed circa 1875 in the collection of the Addison Gallery, Andover, Massachusetts.

An 1878 watercolor, Milkmaid, in the collection of the National Gallery includes the same woman as the central figure in the present example.

This watercolor will be included in the forthcoming Spanierman Gallery/CUNY/Goodrich/Whitney catalogue raisonn/ae of the works of Winslow Homer.
