Cf: Alan Crawford, C.R. Ashbee. Architect, Designer & Romantic Socialist, Yale, 1985, p. 334, fig. 167 (Similar example illustrated) See also: Alexander Koch (ed.), L'exposition internationale des arts dcoratifs modernes, Darmstadt, 1902, p. 309 (Similar example exhibited at the International Exhibition of Turin in 1902)

Although Ashbee's work was not directly influenced by oriental art, his attitude and outlook was parallel to that of many working 'under the spell of Japan'. His trips to America brought him into contact with such work by Greene and Greene and spawned plans for a trip of his own to the East.
