Lot Essay

This secretaire commode is interesting with its unusual fall-front top drawer. It relates to a type often described as Lombard or Venetian. A similar commode described possibly as from Padova is illustrated in C. Alberici Il Mobile Veneto, Milano, 1980, pp.119-121. The top is conformingly inlaid with a scalloped cartouche depicting a battle with riders.
A pair of similar commodes, without the inlaid pilasters, giltwood herms or foliate mounts, sold Christie's King Street, 25th March 1999, lot 160.
