Lot Essay

H.M.S. Barrosa served off South Africa from 11.10.1899 to 25.3.1901.

From the beginning of the War the British attempted to stop supplies reaching the Boers. Delagoa Bay was practically blockaded and ships regularly stopped and searched. In December 1899, for example, several German steamers were taken off to Durban to be examined.
