Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Fleetwood Rynd, D.S.O., as a 2nd Lieutenant, commanded the Royal Artillery guns at Premier Mine during the Defence of Kimberley. During the Guerrilla War he commanded the Elswick Battery which was manned by the 1st Northumberland Volunteer Artillery. It was for these latter services that he was created a companion of the Distinguished Service Order (see The Times History for details of this Battery). Twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 10.9.1901 and 29.7.1902 refer), he was invested with his D.S.O. by the King on 18.12.1902.

Rynd was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1898 and placed on Retired Pay in 1922, following an appointment with the Civil Administration in Iraq. He was a Camp Commmandant in Mesopotamia during the Great War.
