Major J.R. Perrins, having fought with the Town Guard at Talana, was subsequently commissioned into Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. He did not claim his Medals until the 1920s, by which time he was serving in the Southern Rhodesian Volunteer Forces, service that entitled him to the Efficiency Decoration which was awarded in 1937. The Queen's South Africa Medal was issued from the Dundee Town Guard roll and, separately, six additional clasps from the Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry roll which Perrins obviously did not have attached onto his Medal.
