Sold with one of Queen Victoria's Chocolate Tins, with near complete contents, an old accompanying handwritten note stating, 'H.M. Queen
Victoria's gift to her Troops in S. Africa, Xmas 1899/2nd Lieut. Cecil Sherman Platt, 5th Dragoon Guards.'

2nd Lieutenant Cecil Sherman Platt died of enteric fever in Ladysmith on 5.1.1900.

Born in 1877 and educated at Eton, he entered the 5th Dragoon Guards from the Militia in 1898 and accompanied his Regiment to South Africa from India in September 1899. Platt was one of two 5th Dragoon Guards Officer fatalities during the War and is commemorated on the memorial in School Hall at Eton College.
