Lot Essay

This pen was given to the vendor by the late Major A.C.J. Congreve, youngest son of General Congreve, V.C. After his escape from Pretoria, Churchill visited Captain Congreve (as he then was) in hospital, where he was recovering from wounds received at Colenso in his V.C.-winning attempt to recover the guns, and left the pencil on Congreve's bed.
