Lot Essay

Private George Ellmore won the maximum number of clasps awarded to any one soldier for the Boer War - ten.

The 9th Lancers war services 'were as continuously hard, as brilliant, and as fruitful as those of any other regiment' (Stirling refers) and the Regiment campaigned ceaselessly for two and a half years. The only Regiment to receive four Battle Honours - 'South Africa 1899-1902', 'Modder River', 'Relief of Kimberley' and 'Paardeberg', by the end of hostilities the 9th Lancers had been present at the following battles and operations: Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, Magersfontein, Koedoesberg Drift, Klip Drift, Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, De Wet Hunt and Capture of Lotter.
