Assistant Veld Kornet Gerrit Jacobus Van Der Westhuizen, D.T.D., was a "bitter-ender" who served in the Vrede and Standerton Commandos.
He fought in the Natal Campaign at Lombard's Kop, Colenso and Spion Kop amongst others and was one of the besiegers at Ladysmith.
