Lot Essay

Bugler J. Dunne, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, was 14 years old when he was wounded at the Battle of Colenso. He became an instant hero in England and was presented to Queen Victoria at Osborne in February 1900, where she gave him a bugle to replace the one he had lost at Colenso.
