The Railway Pioneer Regiment was raised in December 1899, 'its work being to assist in protecting the railways and repair bridges, culverts, and lines when broken' (Stirling refers). Most of its members were refugees from Johannesburg and an excellent account of its activities can be found in General Sir Ernest Swinton's Over My Shoulder.
