Major R. Orpen, [C.M.G.], raised Orpen's Horse at the end of January 1900 and commanded it in the fighting in Cape Colony, serving under General Settle. When Orpen's Horse was disbanded he joined the Border Scouts, which regiment had served alongside them in the hunt for Maritz.
