Private W.B. Buckle died of wounds at Spearman's Camp on 21.1.1900.

He had been dangerously wounded earlier that day during the attack on the Boers' right flank north of the Tugela. This was the attempt by General Hildyard to seize the heights close to Spion Kop but the attacks faltered against well entrenched positions. The West Yorkshires suffered casualties of one Officer and four men killed, and one Officer and 35 men wounded.
