Colonel William Alexander Gordon, [C.M.G.], [C.I.E.], D.S.O., fought in the Boer War as a Militia Officer of the Worcestershire Regiment attached to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, serving in the Cape Colony and Orange Free State from February 1900. In 1901 he became the A.D.C. to the Governor of Cape Colony, a position he held until 1904 when he was appointed the Governor's Private Secretary. Gordon served in this capacity until 1909 and was created a C.M.G. in the same year.

In the Great War he was wounded at Gallipoli, served in Mesopotamia and became the Port Commandant of Amara on the Tigris. Gordon was Mentioned in Despatches thrice and created a Companion of the Distinguished Order of the Indian Empire.
