The St. John Ambulance Brigade Medal for South Africa was awarded in 1902 and sanctioned for official wear on uniform in 1904.
'The outbreak of the South African War in October 1899 brought about a joint action by the Order of St. John and the British Red Cross Society. This co-operation, which prevented much wasteful overlapping, enabled members of the Brigade to serve in South Africa, both as auxiliaries of the Royal Army Medical Corps and in private hospitals set up by the Central Red Cross Committee.
A total of 1871 Medals were awarded to members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade who either went overseas to South Africa, or who took an active part in the mobilisation, training or despatch of medical comforts ... The men served on hospital ships and ambulance trains as well as with field hospitals' (Boer War Tribute Medals refers).
