Private W.E. Carthew was taken prisoner near Pretoria on 30.5.1900, one of seven 16th Lancers to be captured during the War.

Johannesburg was occupied on the 31.5.1900 after being encircled by British troops the day before. The 16th Lancers were to the north of the city and an action must have ensued as Lieutenant C.E. St. J. Harris and four men were wounded, one man missing and Captain C.W. Eccles and Private Carthew taken prisoner.
