A Johannesburg Souvenir Album With C.I.V. Associations
An album, 9in. by 7in. (25cm. by 19cm.), bound in black Morocco leather with gold tooling, the cover inscribed 'Souvenir Of Johannesburg, May 31st 1900, J.W. Portch Esqre.', approximately 30 leaves, containing some 45 photographs and other material. Photographs include views of Johannesburg and the surrounding countryside, mines, etc., some group and individual shots of members of the City Imperial Volunteers and other units (one interesting one of the Military Commissioner of Police and his Staff), a Spy cartoon of Colonel Mackinnon, commanding the C.I.V., manuscript signatures of Roberts, Kruger, Botha, Reitz, etc., and other ephemera, including Passes and travel authorities issued to Portch in his capacity as clerk to the Military Commissioner of Police in Johannesburg; together with a manuscript letter dated 3.9.1900 from Portch to the Adjutant of the C.I.V. regarding the funeral of a Private of Mounted Infantry killed in a shooting incident; and a written certificate, signed by the Military Commissioner of Police, that 'Pte. I.W. Portch, City Imperial Volunteers, served in this office as Confidential Clerk during the first four months of the British occupation of Johannesburg and gave every possible satisfaction'
