Prince Alfred's Volunteer Guards were raised at Port Elizabeth in 1856. One of the oldest South African volunteer units, it was mobilised at the outbreak of hostilities and served in Cape Colony. In January 1900 two Companies were converted into Mounted Infantry and served in the Orange Free State and Transvaal.
