Sold with original Mentioned in Despatches Certificate inscribed to 'Capt. (T. Lt.-Col. H.H.B. Cunningham, 1/3rd E. Lan. Fd. Amb., R.A.M.C. (T.F.)' (dated 8.11.1918); and a Medical School, Argyll Square, Edinburgh Prize Medal, silver (Hallmarks for Edinburgh, 1835), 'Awarded by John Mackintosh, M.D. to Mr. Hugh Cunningham', for a successful competition in the Pathology and Physics Class in the 'Session 1834-35', 53mm.
Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Hugh Blair Cunningham was commissioned in the Royal Irish Fusiliers on 4.4.1900 and served in South Africa from May 1900 until the end of the War. He was placed on the Reserve of Officers in 1903 and took a Militia Commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1905.
During the Great War Cunningham served in Gallipoli, Egypt and the Balkans and commanded the 1/3 Lancashire Field Ambulance in France from 29.6.1917. He was wounded twice and Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 30.12.1918 refers) and was awarded the Territorial Decoration in 1919.
