The 2nd Battalion, Royal West Surrey Regiment, which fought through all Buller's Natal engagements, had one man killed and 26 wounded during the attack on the left hill at Alleman's Nek. The attack was successful and the Boers fled their position. Stirling concludes: 'The advance of the leading infantry battalions in the face of very heavy rifle and artillery fire has been greatly praised.'
