'One of these [Boer defensive position which needed to be captured before the entrapment of Prinsloo and his 4000 Boers in the Brandwater Basin could be completed] was Slabbert's Nek, a position strongly entrenched by Boers, who knew its value. The Royal Irish Rifles failed to drive the Boers away, and the advance of two companies of the Wiltshires was also brought to a standstill despite their gallant efforts, after losing some 20 men. For the daring with which he led his men on this occasion in the face of a murderous fire, Sergeant Stimson received the Medal of Distinguished Conduct' (Rudolph refers).
