Lot Essay

Corporal W. Ladbrook was wounded near Krugersdorp on 23.12.1900.
French's Scouts were raised at the end of 1899 and named after Major-General John French. Commanded by Captain Bettelheim, a former member of the Reform Committee, the unit was composed of men selected for their knowledge of the country and its ways. As their name suggests they were employed as scouts and undertook many daring reconnaissances in front of the advancing British troops.
