42 Medals were issued named to the Molteno Town Guard. Molteno was entered by the Boers on 27.11.1899 during their invasion of Cape Colony but not occupied in force. In December 1900 Molteno and 13 other districts in Cape Colony were placed under martial law. During parts of the Guerilla War General Kritzinger and his Commandos operated in its environs and in April 1901 captured a supply train near the town.
