His Honour Judge Percival Carleton Gane was an Oxford-educated lawyer practising in Grahamstown when he served in the Town Guard. He later became a distinguished Judge of the Supreme Court, Eastern Districts of Cape Colony and was made an Honorary Doctor of Law of Rhodes University and an Honorary Bachelor of Law of the University of Cape Town. His later Medals are confirmed and represent an unusual breadth of over 50 years between first and last, from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth.
