T. Maritz was employed as a Ganger in the Cape Government Railways and earned his Medal by patrolling the Rosmead line in February 1901. During this month Rosmead was swept as part of the hunt for De Wet who had invaded Cape Colony and who Kitchener was trying to head off from the area.
