Corporal S.J. Eastes joined the Midland Mounted Rifles at its inception on 1.4.1901 and served with them until the end of the War. He had previously served in Brabant's Horse from 21.11.1899 to 3.8.1900. The Midland Mounted Rifles were formed with the express purpose of expelling the invaders from Cape Colony and had several serious clashes with Lotter's Commando. Only 45 men were entitled to the King's South Africa Medal.
