Captain J.E. Pearce was Mentioned in Despatches by Lord Kitchener (London Gazette 29.7.1902 refers).
He was recommended by the Officer Commanding, The Electrical Engineers, Royal Engineers who stated that Pearce should be rewarded for 'General all round good work since arrival in South Africa'. Pearce landed in South Africa in April 1901 and commanded detachments of Engineers that installed electric light in hospitals and erected searchlights in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. He was noted as 'a most energetic and painstaking officer. Has carried out every work of which he has charge expeditiously, economically, and without a hitch of any kind' (War Office records refer). During the Great War he was a Temporary Captain at the Hampshire Aircraft Parks.
