D.S.O. London Gazette 31.10.1902.
Brigadier Charles Reginald Johnson, [C.M.G.], D.S.O., received a myriad of Recommendations from different Commanders for an award and as well as his D.S.O. was Mentioned in Despatches by Lord Kitchener (London Gazette 23.7.1902 refers). Among the Recommendations he received were the following:
'Lieut. C.R. Johnson. From 1.3.1901 to 30.9.1901 this Officer was O.C. R.E. Potchefstroom in charge of a section of the Railway Line Defences of which I was in charge. From 1.10.1901 to 4.1.1902 he was under me for blockhousing with Col. Sir R. Colleton's column. This Officer has done such consistently good and reliable work on all occasions that I recommend him for the D.S.O.'
'Lieut. C.R. Johnson, 7th Field Company, R.E. is an exceptional, capable, reliable, hardworking Officer both when in charge of the Railway defences of the Potchefstroom sub-district and when blockhousing under me with Colonel Colleton's column. He is sound in his views and most thorough in his execution of them.'
'Lieut. C.R. Johnson has done excellent service in putting into state of defence several posts along the line' etc., and also previously with General Babington's and Brigadier-General Hamilton's forces. I think his services since the commencement of the campaign deserve recognition.'
'Lieut. C. R. Johnson. In command of a section of the [7th Field] Company employed on detached work in the Transvaal from June 1900 to May 1902 - service in South Africa from 15.7.99 to present date [9.6.1902]. The good work done by this Officer in the Transvaal has on several occasions been brought to my notice' (War Office records refer).
During the Great War he was wounded twice, created a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, Mentioned in Despatches five times, promoted Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel and awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus, Third Class with swords, and the Legion d'Honneur, Fifth Class.
