Trooper Frederick William Pocock died of disease at Heilbron on 30.1.1902.
The Canadian Scouts were raised by Major "Gat" Howard in January 1901 from Non-Commissioned Officers and men of the Canadian Contingents who wanted to continue serving in South Africa. Recruiting was later opened to non-Canadians and the Scouts earned a fearsome reputation for themselves in the bitter Guerilla War in the Transvaal. Moeller wrote of Howard: 'Major Gat Howard who is in command of them, is a Yankee, and went all through the American War. He has seen much service with Red Indians, and is a typical scout leader' (Two Years at the Front refers). Various sources relate the story of Captain Ross calling the Canadian Scouts together after Howard's death and making them swear on an oath not to take prisoners.
