Brevet-Major Robert Bruce Blunt died on 20.2.1902 of wounds received the previous day at Llangelegan, near Vryheid.
Major Blunt, a veteran of the Sudan Campaign and the invasion of Crete, had been severely wounded at Venter's Spruit on 20.1.1900 during Buller's second attempt to relieve Ladysmith. On recovering from his wounds, he was appointed Staff Officer for Intelligence in Natal in October 1900 and at the time of his death was the Staff Officer, Dundee Sub-District. Blunt was Mentioned in Despatches by Lord Roberts (London Gazette 10.9.1901 refers) and awarded the Brevet of Major.
On 19.2.1902, he was acting Staff Officer to Colonel Evans, Natal Volunteers, who led a party to search a farm at Langelegan, 20 miles east of Vryheid. Colonel Evans left his men at some distance from the farm, and with Major Blunt went to the farm to demand the surrender of the inmates. When they were close to the house the Boers fired, killing Colonel Evans and dangerously wounding Major Blunt, who succumbed to his injuries the following day.
