Lieutenant James Edward Rees was injured by a fall from his horse while on service with the Western Light Horse at Salisbury, Rhodesia on 2.6.1902 and died the following day. He was a Fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute and his name was inscribed on their memorial tablet.
The Western Light Horse were only one Squadron strong and formed at Vryburg in April 1902 from the remnants of Ashburner's Light Horse, Dennison's Scouts and the Vryburg Scouts.
