MANUSCRIPT -- Manuscript leaf on vellum (325 x 243mm.), opening initial from the prologue to the promissione of the dogde Andrea Dandolo [Venice, 1343]. Text in double columns and in red and black, 5-line historiated initial on recto, depicting a portrait of the dodge, the infill ground is blue with white penwork decoration, within a frame of gold and a black border, foliate border in red, blue, green, cream, light brown and burnished gold with white penwork decoration (lower border lightly smeared and creased), on verso a 4-line historiated initial, depicting a priest, the infill ground is blue with white penwork decoration, within a frame of gold and a black border, the priest in the initial is holding a large flag depicting the Lion of St, Marks which extends into the upper margin (initial smeared), glazed and framed.
