PRESENTATION COPY, the verso of the title inscribed, 'To Miss Freeman through whose kindness this portfolio is entirely due. With kindest regards, Powys Evans.'
Powys Evans (fl. 1920s-30s) studied at the Slade under Richard Sickert and Sylvia Gosse. The Christmas Bookman of 1922, commenting on his caricatures for The Beggar's Opera, stated, 'here is sure draughtsmanship, a delicate sense of line and balance ... a caricaturist of rare humour and sensibility and a true artist.' The present copy was presented by Evans to Beryl Freeman who played Diana Trapes in the original production of the opera at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in 1920. Included in the lot is a copy of the score signed by members of the cast, the composer Frederick Austin, and Claude Lovat Fraser who provided the illustration for the front cover. (2)
