Lot Essay

This ottoman, originally made for Betsy Cushing Roosevelt Whitney, was purchased back from the Whitney estate by Sister Parish and returned into inventory to Parish Hadley. Although Mrs. Parish designed the offered lot for her friend and client, Mrs. Whitney, she later made a replica for her own Fifth Avenue apartment. It seems as if the canine-loving Mrs. Parish felt that the scale and size of the piece was perfect for her Pekinese, for whom nothing was too extravagant. An image of Mrs. Parish's ottoman appears in Parish-Hadley, Sixty Years of American Design, 1995, pp. 16-17
