Lot Essay

Umehara had often visited the resort town of Karuizawa, near Tokyo, but it was in 1950 that he first rented a house there in order to begin painting the local volcano, Mount Asama. Three years later he built himself a country villa next door. For examples of his other paintings of Mount Asama see Tomiyama Hideo and Harada Minoru, Umehara Ryuzaburo/Yasui Sotaro, vol. 14 of 20-seiki Nihon no bijutsu/Art Gallery Japan (Tokyo: Shueisha, 1987), pls. 25, 26.
