Lot Essay

With over one hundred railway companies in operation at the turn of the century competition was very intense, and nowhere more so than between the routes from England to Scotland. Many of the companies used comfort as a selling point, and it was the North British Railway who introduced the first sleeping cars in Britain in 1873.
