By the end of the nineteenth century the reasoning behind travel abroad had changed and it was no longer seen as a means of self-improvement, but a time for pleasure. One railway company to take note of this was the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway who ran regular trips to European destinations via their Newhaven to Dieppe steamer service.
