Lilium Grayii (Lily)
signed 'Lilian Snelling' (lower right) and inscribed 'Lilium Grayii' (lower centre)
pencil and watercolour
21.1/8 x 14.1/8 in. (536 x 359 mm.)
LITERATURE:
see A.Grove and A.D.Cotton, Supplement to Elwes' Monograph of the genus Lilium, London, 1933-1940.
A.D.Cotton notes that 'Asa Gray's lily is a very distinct species, confined [in the wild] to the summits and upper slopes of the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia, West Virginia and north-west Carolina. It was originally collected by Gary in 1840 on Roan Mountain, a summit of the Great Smoky Mountains - a range of the Appalachians which divides North Carolina from Tennnessee. Gray was not satisfied that his plant was distinct from other species, and with characteristic discretion, refrained from publishing it as a new species.' (p.27, op.cit.).
