Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741).
Phytanthoza Iconographia, oder eigentliche Vorstellung etlicher Tausend, Sowohl einheimisch= als auslndischer . . . Pflantzen, Bume, Stauden, Kruter, Blumen, Frchten und Schwmme &c. Text by J. G. N. & L. M. Dieterich. Regensburg: printed by Hieronymous Lentz, 1735-1737. Volume I only (of 4), large 2 (380 x 250mm). Titles in German, Latin and French printed in red and black, section title to text in red and black, text in Latin and German, 275 engraved and mezzotint plates, printed in colours and finished by hand, after Georg Dionysius Ehret, N. Asamin and others, by J. Seuter, J.E. Ridinger and J.J. Haid, one double-page. (Small tears to plates 77, 134 and 172, some general light browning or staining, heavier to about 22 plates.) Contemporary German alum-tawed pigskin over wooden boards, covers panelled in blind, pigskin and brass clasps (soiled and lightly scuffed). Provenance: A. Einberger (signature).
The work was based on Weinmann's collection of plants and was financed by him, despite the claim on the Latin title that it was produced at the expense of the artists and engravers. The resultant botanical drawings are mainly by Ehret, his first published work, and by N. Asamin, a young woman whose paintings were 'particularly clever and dainty'. Ehret fell out with Weinmann and his contribution is nowhere acknowledged. It was the first work to use the colour-printed mezzotint successfully, and indeed Trew considered his Plantae Selectae as 'an appendicem to Weinmann's publication'.
