Titles in red and black. 108 plates by A.F. Lydon, printed in colours from woodblocks by Benjamin Fawcett. Contemporary green calf gilt, covers with double-fillet border, spines in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration of stylised flower and foliage tools, gilt edges (spines slightly faded). Provenance: Frederic William Haigh (armorial bookplate).

A fine set of this work on all the most beautiful alpine plants then available in Great Britain. A mixed edition with the first edition of Volume II and a second edition of volume I. The first edition of the first volume was originally published between 1871 and 1872, and reissued (as here) to accompany the publication of the second volume in 1874. The text includes botanical descriptions of each plant, together with details of when it was discovered or first introduced to Great Britain, and instructions on its cultivation.
