The complete contribution on birds from this important work on the natural history of Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. The present volume forms Section 3, volume I of Part 7 of the larger work Expdition dans les parties centrales de l'Amrique du Sud.. by Castelnau (originally published in 14 volumes, Paris, 1850-1859). Wood considered the complete work to be "One of the most valuable contributions of its kind in all Zoological literature."
"Castelnau and his party sailed to Rio de Janiero on board the French war brig 'Dupetit-Thouars', and began his meteorological, magnetic, botanical, and zoological observations there. The expedition resolved to cross South America from Rio via Minas Geraes, Goias, and Mato Grosso. They explored the north of Mato Grosso, the River Paraguay as far as Ascunin, and from the Vila Bela they traveled to Bolivia through Potosi, finally reaching La Paz. From there they journeyed to Lima, where they spent some time, then proceeded to the source of the Amazon from whence they sailed to Par. Owing to the death of a member of the expedition, d'Osery, who was killed by Indians, a large part of the records were lost, among them the diary of the voyage, the register of the astronomical and barometrical observations, and the albums of drawings and natural history notes. However, the minutes were saved, which made the writing of the history of this expedition possible...The rarity and scientific interest of this work encouraged German publishers to reproduce it in its entirety in 1922...this reproduction is...uncommon, as a greater part was purchased by scientific institutions."
