Edward Donovan (1768-1837)
An Epitome of the Natural History of the Insects of India, and the Islands in the Indian Seas. London: Printed for the author, Messrs. Rivington and others, 1800-[1804]. 4 (281 x 220mm). 9-line errata slip bound in after title. 58 FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES by and after Donovan. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary green straight-grained morocco gilt, g.e. (light ink stains to covers, spine faded and somewhat discoloured, slight scuffing to extremities).
FIRST EDITION, an excellent copy internally containing beautifully executed plates of a selection of the most 'photogenic' Indian insects. As Donovan makes clear in the introduction he intended the present work to be seen as volume II of a 'General Illustration of Entomology', he also notes that the majority of the specimens are from his own collection, with a minority from Sir Joseph Banks' cabinet as well as the "noble collections of Mr.Francillon, Mr.Drury, and some others". Nissen ZBI 1144.
