Beschrijving vande Natuur der Viervoetige Dieren [...der Vissen en Bloedloze Water-diere; ...der Vogelen; ...der Gekerfde of Kronkel-dieren, Slangen en Draken] nessens haer Beeldennissen in koper gesneden. Amsterdam: Jan Jacobsz Schipper, 1660. 6 parts in two volumes, 2 (358 x 218mm). Four hand-coloured engraved titles, 250 hand-coloured engraved plates. (Two titles torn and repaired with adhesive tape, 1 title browned and loosely inserted, 4 plates in part I with adhesive tape at inner margin, one with resultant damage to image, plate 38 in part I browned and loosely inserted, plate 18 in part II with surface damage to image, plate 9 in the final part holed and repaired.) Near contemporary mottled calf gilt, large crowned monogram blocked at centre of each cover, spines in eight compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, g.e. (spines scuffed and chipped at head and foot, joints split, some scuffing to extremities).
First collected edition in Dutch. The various sections were first published in Latin, in 5 volumes, in Frankfurt from 1650-1653. The engravings in the work comprise, vol.I: a title for the section on four-footed animals, 80 plates of four-footed animals; 48 plates of fish. Volume II: a single title for the two sections on fish and shells, crabs, lobsters, sea-cucumbers, 20 plates of shells, crabs, lobsters, sea-cucumbers; a title for the section on birds, 62 plates of birds; a single title for the two sections on insects and snakes, 28 plates of insects, 12 plates of snakes.
