Adolf & Karl Mller
Waidmanns Freud' im Wald' und auf der Haid. Aquarelle von C.F. Deiker, mit Schilderungen aus dem Thierleben von Adolf und Karl Mller. Darmstadt: Carl Khler, [circa 1876]. 24 original parts in 21, large oblong 4 (275 x 346mm). Mounted chromolithographic additional title after August Fritz (dated 1876 in the plate), 23 mounted chromolithographic plates after Deiker. Unbound as issued in original green paper printed wrappers (wrapper to part 1 split at fold, small hole to upper wrapper of part 19), all contained within a single later morocco-backed solander box. Provenance: Schloss Dyck (early shelf-mark label 'Schloss Dyck Naturw. 402', sale Venator & Hanstein, Cologne 14-15 September 1992 lot 909).
A fine unsophisticated set, in the original parts, of this popular late nineteenth century work on game animals and birds. The first edition was published in 1876, and demand was such that there were at least two separate reprints by 1880 (1877 and 1880). Carl Friedrich Deiker (1836-1892), born in Wetzlar, studied at Hannau and Dresden. He restricted himself to painting sporting subjects and bought a realism and movement to his work that was often lacking in the work of his contemporaries (he cited Snyders as a major influence). He exhibited at Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Dusseldorf and Hannover. He produced the watercolour originals for three works by the Mllers (Tiere der Heimat, Der Hund und seine jagd, and the present work). Examples of his oils are held by the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne, the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, and the Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf, which also held a retrospective exhibition of his work after his death in 1892.
