A series of six engravings on the training of race-horses. London: published by J. Boydell and H. Parker, 1769.
6 line engravings (each 395 x 555mm.) by Elliott after Smith, with engraved title, imprint, artist and engraver's names and sequential numbering below image area. (All close-cut to plate-mark.) Unbound as issued within modern cloth folder, within a single morocco-backed cloth slip-case, titled in gilt on spine.
The series comprises:
1.The Cullen Arabian &c.
2.Brood Mares and their Foles.
3.Catching the Colts.
4.Subduing, Shoeing, the Cavison and Pillar.
5.Bridling, Sadling, Breaking, & Training.
6.Finish'd Horses Match'em & Trajan Running at New-market.
A FINE AND VERY RARE SERIES WITH GREAT CHARM. The prints were originally published by Smith in January 1758, and may be taken from originals prepared for Smith's known benefactor Charles Cokayne, 5th Viscount Cullen (1710-1802). The Mellon collection includes an oil portrait by Smith of the Viscount's second son, Borlase Cokayne, riding Sultana, one of his father's horses. Viscount Cullen's most famous horse was The Cullen Arabian, pictured in the first of the present series being prepared to service a brood mare. The plates then follow through the lives of the future race-horses: foals, colts, breaking, shoeing, training and finally racing. Thomas Smith of Derby, the father of John Raphael Smith, was self-taught and is now primarily known as a topographical artist. Little is known of his life, other than his work: in addition to the present series Boydell also published 40 views of Derbyshire and northern England, in 1760.
