Van Dael
Two chinoiserie drawings of a pair of styllised Mandarin Ducks on a pond amidst waterlillies and pond-weed; and a pair of seed-eating birds, on a magnolia branch with cherry and morning-glory
both signed and dated 'Van Dael 1802' (lower left)
watercolour, heightened with bodycolour. Thin paper backed onto thick laid paper, unframed
both: 13.5/8 x 10 in. (346 x 269mm.)
The style of this pair of drawings is very close to that employed by the chinese artists working out of Canton for the European market. It is perhaps only the inscriptions and the inaccuracies in the depictions of the birds that would suggest a western origin for this pair. A number of Van Daels are recorded, but none are likely candidates for the present highly decorative works. (2)
